Paul Geissler • A Special Event

A Special Exhibit

The city of Washington will be hosting families from our sister city of Marbach, Germany May 31st to June 12th. In honor of their visit The Art Center will be hosting a special showing of works by German Artist Paul Geissler.

Professor Paul Geissler, a German painter and etcher of landscapes and city views, studied art in Weimar under Max Thedy. For most of his career, Geissler lived and worked in the city of Munich. During the 1920’s and 1930’s Geissler’s etchings reached an international reputation. He etched views in France, Spain, Italy and England and in 1929, he was commissioned by the city of New York to depict some of the principal buildings in a series of etchings. Geissler’s etching style provided both great detail and strong atmospheric effects, he portrayed his subjects admirably.

In the course of his career Mr. Geissler
received commissions for paintings from
the German Empress and a Russian
grand-duke. Mr. Geissler gave up painting
to specialize on etchings, the art he liked
best. He traveled to the USA in 1928,
returning to Germany via Sicily and the
Italian mainland. While in the USA,
Geisler executed beautiful etchings
of Independence Hall and the Betsy
Ross House in Philadelphia as well
as scenes of Yale and Princeton. Mr.
Geissler was appointed professor in
Germany in 1943. Several universities
offered him a post, but he remained
independent. He served as Chairman
of the Werdenfelser Kunstlerbund
Association of Artists in the Garmisch,
Germany area. Professor Geissler
died May 30, 1965.
